Hi Internet People!

My name is Matt- as you may already know- and I am beginning this blog as a place for people to explore my video and web production process as well as communicate about gear, software and techniques.

I guess I should start with a short story about myself…I’m positive I’m leaving things out…but I’ll do my best to give you an idea.

My parents bought me my first 35mm Fuji camera when I was about 8. I loved taking photos and running to CVS to have them printed. When I was 15 when my high school media production teacher first handed me a Canon mini-dv camera and tripod and told me to go out shooting. I shot, then edited in iMovie and I was totally immersed in front of that blue iMac. I went on to shoot documentaries- my strongest format to date. By the end of high school I was technical directing live 3 manned camera shoots as well as 3 robo-camera shoots.

I went on to college where I majored in communication with a focus on media production. I learned how to light, shoot, capture audio and everything else one needs to know to do this sort of thing correctly. The most important thing I did was learn to edit. Projects can be made or broken in the edit suite and it’s important to know how this is done.

After college I worked for styleboston, a lifestyle show on WCVB Channel 5 here in Boston. It was there that I learned most of my current editing skills and how video works in the real world, so-to-speak.

Now I both work full time doing video for a college in Boston while and I freelance regularly. 2012 is going to be the year of motion graphics for me. I’m planning to master Adobe After Effects so my work can reach that next level.

I may go on tangents in this blog about technology and how 5000 bits per second while exporting through Apple Compressor in Quicktime H.264 video with aiff audio corrected for web streaming is really super important and yada yada yada. But at the end of the day, I care most that a piece looks good, sounds good, and that it tells a story. THE most important part, however, is that the client is happy. For filmmakers who are just starting out, it’s the most important thing to know. It’s not about you, it’s about the client- I can’t stress that enough.

So Internet People, welcome! I look forward to posting for some time to come.

Your friend,
Matt
